Story behind “Tasman Lake Textures”
This photograph was taken during my road trip through New Zealand’s South Island, just days after a fresh snowfall left the region blanketed in 10 cm of snow. My biggest goals for this trip was to make it to Mt Cook, but the forecast wasn’t looking promising. However, the day before our planned visit, the skies cleared and it was set to be perfect.
Road into Mt Cook National Park
On the drive from Lake Tekapo, thick fog surrounded us the entire way which meant we couldn’t see much scenery. The moment we entered Mt Cook National Park; the fog lifted.
I knew I wanted to do a helicopter flight over Mt Cook but was scared to do it alone as no one else wanted to pay. I wasn’t sure if the weather would hold off until the afternoon but still booked the flight.
Hooker Valley Track
After hiking the Hooker Valley Track, we headed straight to Mt Cook Airport. The fog was beginning to roll back in, but I got the green light from the company for the flight to go ahead. It was the most magical flight I’ve ever done.
Tasman Lake feeding out to Lake Pukaki with the fog coming into Mt Cook
The image was taken over Tasman Lake. Unfortunately, the road to Tasman Lake was closed the day we went to Mt Cook but lucky I got to see it from above. The lake feeds out to Lake Pukaki from the glaciers. I flew with Inflite Helicopters and they were amazing. Highly recommend if you’re heading to Mt Cook on your South Island trip.
