The story behind “Kirra Surfer”

This photograph was taken from the top of Kirra Hill. I had brought my camera along on a beach walk, hoping to capture some coastal shots for my print store. I only had my 55mm lens so couldn’t zoom in as much as I had hoped.

The original image without cropping

I spotted a solo surfer carrying their board toward the ocean. I quickly framed the shot with the intention of later cropping it for a more artistic composition. There were surfers in the original image, but I removed them to draw the audience’s eye to the surfer. This also created negative space in the image.
